False Teeth - Making the Right Choices

Why Dental Implants Can Fail Unexpectedly After The Procedure

Once you have gone through the procedure to have dental implants placed in your jawbone, a lot falls on you in order to make sure that the implant does not fail. You'll need to keep up on your oral health so that the gums that surround the implant remain healthy, even if you think it is not necessary due to having a fake tooth. If the gums start to fail, the implant will go with it. Here are some reasons why the implant can fail unexpectedly after it is installed.

Overloading The New Implant

You must take care when it comes to using your dental implant to bite down on food. It is possible to put too much pressure on the implant right after it has been installed, which can cause some serious problems. It is possible for the temporary crown on the new implant to break as a result of using too much pressure, which will result in a trip back to the dentist to fix it.

People with a teeth grinding problem should use a mouth guard at night to prevent nighttime grinding. Over time, the pressure can put unnecessary force on the implant and cause the implant to fail during the early stages after the surgery.

Having Poor Oral Health

It's important to maintain good habits when it comes to brushing and flossing after the implant is placed in your mouth. While it may be tempting to ignore the new implant because it's a fake tooth, you'll want to be extra diligent when it comes to oral health. It is possible for debris from food to get trapped underneath the temporary crown, which will cause bacteria to form along the gums. This can contribute to an implant failing over time.

If your gums become infected and it gets deep into the gums, it can reach the bone that the implant is attached to. If the bone becomes inflamed, it can lead to redness, swelling, pain, and bleeding, which weakens the support given to the titanium post. If you have any history of gum disease, bone loss is more likely to happen and cause the dental implant to become loose.
